Serzh Sargsyan Meets with European Parliament Members in Brussels
The third President of the Republic of Armenia and leader of the Republican Party, Serzh Sargsyan, held a working lunch on March 5 during his official visit to the Kingdom of Belgium. He met with European Parliament members, including the main rapporteur for Armenia, former Romanian President Traian Băsescu, and the main rapporteur for Azerbaijan, Zeljana Zovković. These parliamentarians are also members of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, they conducted a comprehensive analysis of the regional security environment. President Sargsyan presented his views on the current phase of negotiations regarding the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as well as discussed the origins and developments of the conflict.
At the request of the European Parliament members, Serzh Sargsyan also presented the Republican Party's views on the internal political developments in Armenia. That same evening, the President held another working meeting with the Secretary General of the European People's Party (EPP) and the Centrist Democratic International (CDI), Antonio López-Isturiz, discussing a wide range of issues, including those related to domestic events in Armenia.
It is worth noting that in January of this year, the Executive Committee of the Centrist Democratic International adopted a special resolution regarding the political situation in Armenia, highlighting the government's encroachments on the judiciary and unlawful actions against the Constitutional Court. The organization warned the Armenian government about its path towards authoritarianism and raised concerns that undermining the system of checks and balances in favor of the ruling party, without public pressure, would result in a significant backward step.
The Centrist Democratic International is one of the world's largest and most influential political families, comprising over 70 ruling and major opposition parties from around 50 countries, including from Europe, Latin America, Asia, and other regions.
