Ilham Aliyev 'indignant' after seeing Urartu and Sisian on historic maps

The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, participated in the opening of a museum of historical geography in the Tovuz region on March 4, where he expressed his indignation upon discovering Sisian and Urartu on the displayed historical maps.

Aliyev began to accuse the museum staff regarding the Armenian names on the maps, questioning the accuracy of the names. He became so engaged that he announced the 'true name' of the Hrazdan River as Zeng. Indeed, the river was formerly called Zangu, which in Armenian means 'bell'.

“What century is this map from? Where did you get this map? There are no historical names written on the territory of present-day Azerbaijan, except for Mingachevir. For example, Sisian is written here. At that time, Sisian didn’t exist; later someone invented it... Nothing can be understood from this map. Here, Caucasian Albania (Aghvank) is not mentioned either. And look at how Urartu is written,” said Aliyev, addressing the head of the district executive committee, Mamed Mamedov.
