Cargo Movement from Iran to Armenia to be Restricted

The government of Armenia has decided to extend the temporary restrictions on communications with the Islamic Republic of Iran until March 24.

According to the text of the government decision, based on Article 34 of the Law of the Republic of Armenia on "Normative Legal Acts," the government has resolved to make the following changes and additions to point 1 of its decision No. 197-N of February 24, 2020: the words "for a two-week period" will be replaced with "until March 24, 2020, inclusive.”

The decision will also restrict the entry of cargo vehicles into Armenia. While the government’s decision of February 24 provided for the return of transport vehicles (with drivers who are not citizens of the Republic of Armenia) carrying cargo that entered Armenia from Iran, it will now only permit the return of transport vehicles conducting cargo transport back to Iran via Georgia.

It is worth noting that Armenia's Minister of Health, Arsen Torosyan, stated that there was a need to review the decision on temporarily restricting communications with the Islamic Republic of Iran. In a Facebook live broadcast, Minister Torosyan added that the two-week restriction in place at the Iranian border will be extended until March 24, 2020, inclusive.
