The Number of Suicides in Armenia Has Increased Over the Last Three Years
The number of suicides in Armenia has increased over the last three years. According to the Hayastani Joghovurd newspaper, data from the Statistical Committee of Armenia reveals that in 2017, there were 562 cases of suicide and suicide attempts, 606 in 2018, and 613 in 2019.
According to the Statistical Committee of Armenia, a significant proportion of those who commit suicide are unemployed individuals. Some experts suggest that people are ending their lives due to poor social conditions, fears, and religious ideologies.
It should be noted that suicides are also recorded in penitentiary institutions and the Armed Forces. Only in the Armed Forces, there have been 13 mortality cases this year, four of which were suicides.
However, psychologist Samvel Khudoyan commented in an interview with the Hayastani Joghovurd regarding the statistical data on suicides, stating, “I believe that the post-revolutionary shocks are the cause. For many, that period was devastating; after all, they had just begun to build their careers, and suddenly everything collapsed, everything changed. In addition to the emergence of financial problems, life changed because a significant number of people were left out of the game after the revolution,” he said.
