First in the World: Public Transport in Luxembourg is Now Free

Starting from February 29, all public transport systems in Luxembourg, including trains (except for first-class services), buses (with some nighttime routes excluded), and trams, are now free of charge.

The Ministry of Sustainable Development in Luxembourg, which encompasses the transport department, reported that such measures have previously been implemented by individual cities, but this is the first time it has been applied across the entire country.

The authorities state that this initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion caused by cars. Every day, around 200,000 people commute to work in Luxembourg from Germany, France, and Belgium.

According to AFP, the changes, which the authorities are calling a “significant social measure,” will affect nearly 40% of households.

Fully subsidizing free travel will require an additional annual expenditure of 41 million euros, which will be funded through tax revenues.
