A COVID-19 Vaccine Developed in the U.S. to Be Tested on Humans for the First Time
The American biotechnology company Moderna has introduced the mRNA-1273 vaccine against the COVID-19 coronavirus. This is stated in a press release published on the company's website. It is noted that the first batch of vaccine vials has been sent to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for human trials.
Simultaneously, this vaccine was created in record time, just 42 days after the determination of the coronavirus genome. Approximately one hundred specialists worked on the development of the vaccine.
According to NIAID director Anthony Fauci, vaccine trials are set to begin in April. Twenty to twenty-five healthy volunteers will be invited to participate in the trial. They will receive two doses of the vaccine to assess its safety and the immune response needed to protect against the virus.
The first results of the tests are expected to be known in July or August. If successful, the vaccine could become widely available within a few months.
