Armenian Children Learn in the Backyard, at Home, or While Preparing for Entrance Exams: Emin-Teriyan

During parliamentary hearings on the theme of "Legislative Reforms and Challenges in Higher Education and Science," literary scholar Gevorg Emin-Teriyan addressed the issue of removing Armenian as a mandatory subject from universities.

“We are in a situation where the influence of social networks is leading to a liberalization of illiteracy in our society, and it becomes necessary to explain the basic rules of the Armenian language again,” Emin-Teriyan stated.

He emphasized that the Armenian language needs a system that will verify a person's knowledge and also develop that knowledge. “We are in a hopeless situation where a person at the age of 15 will study Armenian with a tutor, and throughout their entire life there will be no opportunity for the improvement of Armenian language skills,” he remarked.

The speaker noted that while we often refer to Georgia as an example, we remain far from the Georgian model in terms of language. “It turns out that Armenian children learn the language in the backyard, at home, or while preparing for entrance exams,” he explained. Emin-Teriyan believes that we need a comprehensive reform of the Armenian language, and the new government should have initiated this process.
