The Bill Recognizing the Genocide Awaits Committee Discussion in the Verkhovna Rada
The bill recognizing the Armenian Genocide is awaiting committee discussion in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
According to Armenpress, this information was provided by AnalitikaSa.net, which addressed reports from Turkish-Azerbaijani media that, noting the change in the status of another genocide-related bill, hastily concluded that the Rada had refused to discuss the aforementioned bill.
“The draft resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, authored by MP Anton Polyakov from Ukraine's Servant of the People party (registration date: 11/05/2019), remains in the same status and is awaiting committee discussion,” AnalitikaSa.net reports.
Regarding the draft resolution honoring the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, initiated by Daria Volodina and put into circulation on February 14, 2020, it has been withdrawn. As reported by AnalitikaUA.net from authoritative sources, only the author can withdraw the bill, meaning it was not rejected for discussion. The media outlet has reached out to the press service of the bill's author, Daria Volodina, for more detailed information and is currently awaiting a response.
In the last 10 years, four legislative initiatives have been registered in the Ukrainian parliament. On June 6, 2013, the Verkhovna Rada registered a draft resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire. The initiators of the Bill No. 2254a were Ukrainian MPs Vilen Shatvoryan, Arsen Avakov, and Nver Mkrtchyan. On April 3, 2015, the Verkhovna Rada registered a second draft resolution on recognizing the Armenian Genocide by MP Vitali Barvinenko (No. 2530, 04.03.2015). At that time, dozens of MPs joined the parliamentary initiative.
