Cause of Mass Pig Deaths in Armenia Revealed

The cause of the mass pig deaths reported in three farms in the Akhori community of the Lori region has been identified as anaerobic and coccidian infection agents, which were detected through laboratory tests conducted on collected samples. This information was provided by the Information and Public Relations Department of the Food Safety Inspection Body.

Specialists from the Food Safety Inspection Body’s Lori regional center also collected samples from the pig feed. According to the results of the examination, intestinal group bacteria and mold spores were found in the feed samples.

Currently, there has been a reported decline in the total pig population in the three farms of the Akhori village, totaling 165 pigs. SATM inspectors have kept these farms under daily observation for the past two weeks, isolating them and ensuring proper burial of each batch of deceased animals, as well as disinfection of the area and barn to prevent the spread of the infection.

Once the results of the feed sample tests were received, regulatory actions were initiated to trace the source of the feed. The findings will be presented in due course.
