The Situation Regarding Acute Respiratory Infections Shows Signs of Stabilization

Continuing the daily monitoring of influenza and acute respiratory infections, it should be noted that there is currently a stabilization of the situation, with a decrease in some indicators.

The attendance at polyclinics due to acute respiratory infections has decreased by 1.4 times compared to the previous Friday (February 14, 2020), and by 1.2 times compared to the previous Monday (February 10, 2020).

Stabilization is observed in hospitalizations due to acute respiratory infections and post-influenza complications, although pediatric hospitals in Yerevan still operate under heavy burden. Epidemiological analysis data indicates that 65-75% of hospitalized children are young children who, as a risk group, should be vaccinated against influenza.

Once again, we remind that vaccination is the best method to avoid influenza and post-influenza complications. All polyclinics in the Republic are supplied with seasonal influenza vaccines, and those who have not yet received the seasonal influenza vaccination can apply to their registered polyclinic for vaccination, especially pregnant women, children aged 6 months to 5 years, individuals over 65 years of age, and those with chronic diseases of diabetes, respiratory organs, cardiovascular systems, liver, and kidneys.

As for the situation in educational institutions, the current rate of acute respiratory infections in these organizations is 7.1%. This is explained by the fact that due to the implemented "epidemiological filter," entry of children symptomatic of acute respiratory infections is prohibited in educational institutions, and their data is provided to polyclinic organizations for necessary consultations and treatment.

To minimize the spread of acute respiratory infections in educational institutions, the work of the "epidemiological filter" will continue.

According to laboratory research results, the circulation of the A H1N1 subtype, influenza type B, and other respiratory infection pathogens continues in the Republic today.

In order to prevent illness from acute respiratory infections and influenza, as well as to avoid post-influenza complications, the Ministry of Health reiterates:

  • Get vaccinated against seasonal influenza at your registered polyclinic,
  • Avoid contact with patients exhibiting flu-like symptoms,
  • If you are sick, stay at home, especially do not allow children with flu-like symptoms to attend school or kindergarten, ensuring they receive medical consultation and treatment,
  • If you are ill, call your local pediatrician, therapist, or family physician, and do not self-medicate,
  • Do not use antibiotics, as they are not indicated for the treatment of influenza and acute respiratory infections,
  • Dress appropriately for the weather,
  • Follow coughing and sneezing etiquette,
  • Drink plenty of fluids,
  • Regularly ventilate enclosed spaces,
  • Maintain personal hygiene.
