Famous Physicist, Academician Robert Avagyan Has Passed Away

The Presidency of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia deeply regrets to announce that on January 24, Academician Robert Hovsepi Avagyan passed away at the age of 88. The memorial service for Academician Robert Avagyan will take place on January 25 from 18:00 to 20:00 at the 'Matur' funeral hall (address: 27/34 Fuchik Street, Yerevan, opposite Malayan Eye Hospital).

The farewell ceremony will be held on January 26 from the building of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (address: 24 Marshal Baghramyan Avenue) from 12:00 to 13:30.

“Robert Avagyan has served as the head of the quasi-magnetic and polarized photon laboratory at the Yerevan Physics Institute since 1971 and has been the principal researcher since 2007. From 1991 to 1999, he was the group leader in Germany for the Yerevan Physics Institute. Since 1999, he has been a member of the board of the European Physical Society and an honorary physicist at the London Institute of Physics. Between 1989 and 2007, he was the president of the Armenian Physicists' Society.

Academician Avagyan's scientific research focused on experimental physics, elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, high-energy physics, spin physics, radiation physics, and polarized photon beams. He studied the polarization of β electrons in connection with the violation of spatial parity in weak interactions. In 1970, under his leadership, a polarized bunch of quantum quasi-magnets was created at the Yerevan electron ring accelerator.

In 1979, he was the first to observe the radiation of high-energy bound positrons at the Stanford electron accelerator (USA). He also studied the radiation emitted during the binding of high-energy electrons in various crystals using unique angular distribution electron beams he developed.

In 2003, Robert Avagyan was awarded the Anania Shiraz medal,” the statement noted.
