Robbery Incident at Currency Exchange Point Solved

The investigative division of the Malatia-Sebastia administrative districts of the Yerevan Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case regarding a robbery that took place at a currency exchange point.

The Investigative Committee of Armenia reports that, as a result of urgent investigative actions, the identity of the person allegedly involved in the crime has been established.

On January 4, 2020, a security employee from one of Yerevan's shopping centers called in to report that a robbery occurred at the currency exchange point operating within the center around 20:20 that same day. An investigative-operational group was dispatched to the scene immediately. Urgent investigative actions were undertaken to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

According to preliminary data, the person allegedly committing the crime unlawfully entered the premises of the currency exchange point with the intention of committing robbery, using a knife while attacking one of the employees. He demanded the cash present at the exchange point, but faced resistance from the mentioned employee and a colleague who came to assist, preventing him from completing the crime and forcing him to flee from the scene.

A criminal case has been initiated at the Malatia-Sebastia administrative district's investigative division under points 3 and 4 of Part 2 of Article 175 of the RA Criminal Code.

During the investigation, several procedural actions were conducted, including a site examination, which revealed a knife that served as the instrument of the crime, as well as blood-like traces. Samples were taken, and recordings from the surveillance cameras available at the scene have been seized and examined.

To clarify the circumstances of significant importance for the criminal case, forensic medical, biological, and criminalistic examinations have been appointed.

As a result of conducted investigative and operational measures, the identity of the person allegedly committing the crime, a resident of Yerevan born in 1987, was established. He has been identified and arrested on suspicion of committing robbery at the currency exchange point.

The 32-year-old man has been charged under points 3 and 4 of Part 2 of Article 175 of the RA Criminal Code. The investigator has submitted a motion to the court for the selection of detention as a preventive measure, which has been granted.

The investigation continues, with necessary investigative actions being undertaken to ensure a comprehensive, objective, and thorough examination of all circumstances of the incident.
