Attempt to Discuss Closure of Armenian Nuclear Power Plant at Euronest Fails
Efforts by the Azerbaijani delegation to raise the issue of closing the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (Armenian Nuclear Power Plant) at the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly were thwarted thanks to the intervention of the Armenian delegation. Gayané Abrahamyan, head of the Armenian delegation at the Euronest PA and a member of the 'My Step' faction in the Armenian National Assembly, announced this on her Facebook page.
In her post, she stated: ‘Today, the work of the Euronest PA has commenced, and we already have significant achievements. The latest anti-Armenian initiative by the Azerbaijani delegation to include the closure of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant in international resolutions was foiled. The arguments I presented in my speech before the vote, as well as private discussions with EU and Eastern Partnership country lawmakers, yielded results, and the Azerbaijanis voted alone on their proposal.’
‘Another important success was recorded in the Political and Human Rights Committee, where all seven proposals presented by the Armenian delegation were accepted. Our proposed topic for the next year’s resolution work was also adopted with some modifications. During this committee meeting, reports presented by several international and regional experts on the political, human rights, and economic situation in Eastern Partnership countries focused significantly on Armenia and the unprecedented progress of our reforms, as emphasized in the IDEA International organization's Global State of Democracy 2019 report, which indicates that Armenia is the country that has achieved the most progress in the democratization process in Europe.’
‘In the Economic Committee, all our proposals were also voted in favor, and unanimously approved the proposal by delegation member and committee co-chair Taron Simonyan as the main topic of next year’s resolution. We also recorded significant success in the Social Committee, as the proposal presented by the delegation, which primarily addressed the issue of spreading intolerance in the educational system (mainly referring to Azerbaijani anti-Armenian policies), was adopted.’
‘That’s all for today; tomorrow, the full session of the Euronest PA will convene, which has exceptional importance as it allows us to present demands from the standpoint of legitimacy and trust, strengthened by a government formed through legitimate elections in such platforms.’
