Russian Embassy in Armenia Comments on Griboedov Statue Defacement
The Russian Embassy in Armenia has expressed agreement with the official stance of Yerevan, which provided a clear characterization of the ugly act against the statue of the great friend of the Armenian people, A.S. Griboedov. This was stated in a commentary from the Russian Embassy regarding the defacement of the Griboedov statue.
“We believe that the unanimous condemnation of this act by the Armenian public demonstrates the strength of the fraternal and allied relations between Russia and Armenia, which have historically deep roots,” the commentary noted.
It is worth recalling that Shant Harutyunyan, the chairman of the "Tseghakron" party, had his son, Shahen Harutyunyan, publish a photo on his Facebook page the day before, showing red paint splashed on the statue of the Russian writer Alexander Griboedov. Along with the photo, he made a post stating, “Attention. I have just painted the statue of the ambassador of the Russian Empire and writer Griboedov in red, in response to the painting of the plaque of Nzhdeh.”
Shahen Harutyunyan's act sparked outrage among the Armenian segment of the internet. Notably, just two hours after the incident, the statue of Alexander Griboedov was cleaned.
