Azerbaijan's Parliament Votes to Dissolve

The Azerbaijani Parliament, known as the Milli Mejlis, has just passed a decision to dissolve. The resolution received support from not only the ruling majority but also other lawmakers in favor of dissolution.

The desire to dissolve the parliament was expressed by the ruling party, Yeni Azerbaijan (New Azerbaijan), which is affiliated with President Ilham Aliyev. Representatives of the party claim that they no longer align with the political line of the country's president.

In reality, there are currently restructuring processes within the elite in Baku, and the reason for dissolving the parliament is to bring in more contemporary and socially accepted figures. This move will also allow Aliyev to rid the parliament of the “old guard,” whose members are more demanding of the president due to their long-standing presence in power since the tenure of his father.

After the dissolution of the Milli Mejlis, the president of the country will decide when to hold snap elections.
