This is My Dream Armenia Where Mandatory Military Service Will No Longer Exist

This is my dream Armenia where mandatory military service will no longer exist. This statement was made by deputy Hayk Sargsyan of the ‘My Step’ faction during a conversation with journalists, referring to his legislative initiative proposing amendments to the Law on Military Service and the Status of Servicemen in Armenia.

The draft law suggests that conscripted young men can pay 10 million drams, undergo a one-month accelerated military service, and be exempt from the two-year service obligation.

He noted that since 2005, Armenian citizens have had the opportunity to not serve, stay abroad, and return to their homeland after turning 27 to make payments without facing penalties. “I propose that our citizens return to their homeland sooner than their 27th birthday, pay 10 million drams, and serve through an expedited process,” said the deputy, emphasizing that he is confident many citizens will take this step, pay the 10 million drams, and that this will strengthen the Armenian Armed Forces.
