Legalizing Exemption from Military Service for Children of Oligarchs and the Rich: Rustam Gasparyan

Former National Assembly member and veteran Rustam Gasparyan considers the bill proposed by MP Hayk Sargsyan from the ‘My Step’ faction to be dangerous. The bill suggests allowing an exemption from military service for individuals who pay 10 million drams, serving only one month instead of the standard two years.

“Is this a program to undermine or reduce the army? What is happening here? Is the army being shortened for the benefit of oligarchs? Who will be serving? The children of the rich, as usual? The children of the wealthy have always avoided service, and today they are making that avoidance a precedent. They are turning the defense of the homeland into a monetary issue. Will giving money mean that they won't defend the homeland? Now they are legalizing that the children of oligarchs and the rich won’t be serving. This is absurd and unacceptable,” Rustam Gasparyan stated in an interview with NEWS.am.
