Pedestrian Crossing Regulations to be Reviewed, Says Mayor's Spokesperson
In all streets of the city that have six or more traffic lanes, the regulation of pedestrian crossings will be reviewed. This was announced by Yerevan Mayor’s press secretary Hakob Karapetyan on his Facebook page.
During a Q&A session with the Council today, Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan stated that, for the purpose of enhancing traffic safety, he has ordered an inventory of all problematic pedestrian crossings. The Mayor emphasized that the existence of unregulated pedestrian crossings on streets with six or more traffic lanes must be eliminated.
In those areas, either manually controlled traffic lights will be installed or overhead or underground crossings will be constructed. The municipality is closely cooperating with the traffic police on this matter.
Hayk Marutyan also noted that this and other traffic-related issues, including congestion, are significantly linked to the inadequate state of the transportation system. According to him, several issues related to the functionality of the city will receive systematic solutions in parallel with a transportation reform that will be implemented as quickly as possible.
Regarding this issue, the Mayor's first deputy Hrachya Sargsyan informed that by the end of the year, the financial sources for the implementation of the transportation reform will be clarified, and in the near future, the municipality will present available solutions and timelines on transportation issues to the public.
Deputy Mayor Sargsyan also revealed that he recently met with private passenger transportation providers, during which the issue of maintaining an acceptable level of passenger service within the existing system was raised.
