Helping Injured Syrians Is a Moral Obligation for Armenians
Armenia is concerned about Turkey's invasion of Syrian territory. In an interview with the Italian newspaper 'Corriere della Sera,' Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia condemns this action and believes the international community should take steps to withdraw Turkish forces currently in Syria back to Turkish territory.
Speaking on the issue of refugees resulting from the military actions in Syria, Pashinyan noted that Armenia has accepted 20,000 Syrian refugees during this period. 'Considering the population ratio, we rank third in terms of the number of refugees accepted. We have a population of three million. Extending a helping hand to Syrian refugees is a moral mission for us. Syria is a country that needs help. For us, this is primarily a humanitarian issue. At the beginning of the year, our country sent a special mission there, consisting of medical personnel and civil deminers,' Pashinyan said according to Armenpress.
When asked why helping Syrians is seen as a moral mission for Armenians, Pashinyan pointed out that during the Ottoman Empire, the Syrian people saved many Armenians from the military forces of the empire. 'That's why now, when Syrians are suffering, we cannot stand aside. I am glad that we can fulfill our moral duty. Our medical staff has conducted numerous surgical interventions. Many Syrian women and children have been treated by Armenian doctors. Deminers have cleared areas for Syrian children where they can play safely,' added the Prime Minister.
