Video: What are you talking about, Mr. Petrosyan? You should have also cursed during the voting. Argument in Parliament
During a discussion in the National Assembly regarding proposed amendments to the "Family Code" by MP Gevorg Petrosyan from the Prosperous Armenia Party, a heated argument occurred between Assembly President Ararat Mirzoyan and the main reporter, Gevorg Petrosyan.
Petrosyan proposed two amendments: to legally prohibit same-sex marriage and to ban same-sex couples from adopting children. "Regardless, it will be rejected, but I must say, dear colleagues, this project also concerns the prohibition of adoption by same-sex individuals. What is there to check? If there is doubt about sexual orientation during marriage, something can be checked. What do we need to check here?" he stated.
Petrosyan urged to set aside jokes and uphold values. "We are a patriarchal people, a very traditional nation. What does it mean for two homosexuals to adopt a child? How will that child grow up? When I speak like this, you say I am speaking with bitterness. How else should I speak? Should I applaud this topic? Who will understand me? Let someone else present the draft if they disagree with it. Fine, you supported marriage; at least oppose this! I don't want to offend anyone, but now, who will vote against it, would that person want to see such a phenomenon in their family?" asked Petrosyan.
This statement did not sit well with Assembly President Ararat Mirzoyan. He addressed Petrosyan, saying, "What are you talking about? What are you saying?" Petrosyan retorted, "What are you talking about? What are you all saying?"
"Mr. Petrosyan, what are you talking about? You say you wouldn't want this in your family... what kind of personalized remarks are those? You should have also cursed while voting on this!" Mirzoyan responded.
Petrosyan disagreed with Mirzoyan's remarks, asserting that he had not personalized his statements against anyone. "This kind of behavior already has no measure or limit. Now, if someone stands up and says that anyone who votes against this law will have this and that in their family, what is that? This issue must be regulated; it cannot remain like this," he said.
Related speaker, LHK MP Taron Simonyan noted that the committee provided a negative conclusion on the issue since laws already impose such restrictions. Ultimately, the Assembly did not accept the bill.
