“The purpose and the issue here is about creating confusion. It’s about throwing a topic into an interesting agenda,” said Vice President of the National Assembly Alen Simonian during a session on November 12, addressing the draft law introduced by Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) lawmaker Gevorg Petrosyan and his speech.

It is noted that Petrosyan had presented a draft law suggesting to enshrine in law that same-sex couples cannot adopt children. Simonian remarked, “It has become common practice after the revolutions to stir up nationalistic and emotionally charged topics. That is the goal. It’s not that the Constitution allows or disallows these issues. The goal here is to create an image that the government is defending perversion, that it has nothing to do with the Armenian people, nothing to do with the traditional family. Meanwhile, many people, having internalized Turkish culture, are trying to frame those who have studied both in Armenia and abroad, who have returned to benefit Armenia, to strengthen Armenia, putting their lives and freedoms at risk, in a negative light, labeling them from devil worshipers to perverts. This is the goal. The goal is political,” said Alen Simonian.

“Let everyone remember that the Armenian government, the 'My Step' alliance is the most Armenian, the most traditional, the most secular, and the most all-encompassing faction and government. And from that lie, I don’t know, removing this language, this church... don’t try to be more Catholic than the Pope, because we will turn back history and show how everyone voted, what they said, and how they behaved. Don’t do that, especially since the citizens of the Republic of Armenia have already understood what is happening and what they are trying to do,” he stated.
