There Are No Mandatory Subjects in Schools Either: YSU Rector

The Rector of Yerevan State University, Gegham Gevorgyan, addressed the proposal to remove the subjects "Armenian Language" and "Armenian History" from the list of mandatory university subjects during a conversation with journalists today. He mentioned that it is proposed that there should be no mandatory subjects at the university.

Gevorgyan emphasized that there are also no mandatory subjects in schools, as subjects such as Armenian Language, History, Mathematics, and others are enshrined in the criteria approved by the government; however, by law, Armenian Language and Armenian History are not mandatory subjects in schools.

“I asked why you do not want to legally mandate these subjects in schools, and they were surprised. It is somewhat strange to impose educational programs in any institution, which by law is supposed to be autonomous, under legal obligations. I believe these subjects should be taught in universities, but the timing and manner are subject to discussion,” he noted.

The rector believes that these subjects should ideally be taught in the 3rd and 4th years, as they are already taught in high school, and it is necessary to give a year or two break for students to mature before they take these subjects.
