Investigative Committee Probes Circumstances of Toddler's HIV Infection

The Investigative Committee of Armenia is conducting an inquiry in the Arabkir administrative district of Yerevan to clarify the circumstances surrounding a toddler's HIV infection. This was reported by the information and public relations department of the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

On October 16, 2019, a citizen submitted a complaint to the Arabkir police addressed to the Prosecutor General of Armenia, stating that their underage granddaughter had been hospitalized at the 'Arabkir' Medical Center from mid-August to October 11, 2019, where she was found to have AIDS, a condition she had not been previously infected with.

Preliminary data indicate that the child had experienced persistent fevers for several months and was transferred to 'Arabkir' Medical Center on August 20, 2019, after which AIDS was detected. Subsequent investigations revealed that the child's parents did not have HIV.

A criminal case was initiated by the Arabkir police under Article 123, Part 3, Clause 2 of the Criminal Code of Armenia, and the investigation is being conducted by the Investigative Committee's Arabkir subdivision.

For the purpose of clarifying significant circumstances of the case, several forensic examinations have been appointed. The investigation is ongoing.
