NSS Reveals Another Major Fraud Case

The National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia has reported the discovery of a significant fraud case involving the theft of a large sum of money. An Armenian citizen posed as a police officer, promising to facilitate the return of a citizen expelled from Russia for 1,000,000 AMD.

According to the NSS press center, the service remains committed to respecting and upholding human and citizen rights and freedoms, considering the fight against crime as one of its priorities. On October 14, 2019, following a report from a citizen regarding the crime, the NSS conducted operational-investigative measures and investigative actions, leading to factual evidence that the victim, having been expelled to Armenia and wishing to return to the Russian Federation legally, met in Yerevan with an individual who, with fraudulent intent, posed as a police officer.

This individual presented a photograph in police uniform to gain the victim's trust and offered to organize their return to Russia for 1,000,000 AMD. Subsequently, under various pretenses, during September 2019, the perpetrator demanded and received 41,000 Russian rubles and 35,000 AMD from the victim, and on October 15, 2019, an additional 1,000 USD, thereby fraudulently stealing an equivalent of 803,490 AMD.

After receiving the last part of the demanded funds, the individual suspected of committing the crime was apprehended by NSS operatives. Following detention, they confessed to the crime. A criminal case was initiated on October 21, 2019, by the NSS investigative department under the relevant articles of the Armenian Criminal Code, and an investigation is underway.

Note: The person suspected or accused of a crime is considered innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the procedures established by the Criminal Procedure Code of Armenia and by a court judgment that has entered into legal force.
