Does U.S. Action Align with the Interests of Armenia and the Armenian People? - Sanasaryan

David Sanasaryan wrote on his Facebook page: “In international relations, there is no justice, there is only interest, interest and only interest. Is the tension in U.S.-Turkey relations in our interest? I am not so sure; half measures can sometimes cause deeper harm. Does the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the U.S. House of Representatives stem from the interests of Armenia and the Armenian people? Again, I am not so sure. Could it serve our interests? Perhaps, but much needs to change in U.S.-Turkey, U.S.-Russia, U.S.-Armenia, Russia-Armenia, and other international configurations.

On the Republic Day of Turkey, by recognizing the genocide and introducing a new package of economic sanctions against Turkey, the U.S. made it clear to Turkey that its directives must be followed. It indicated that there is no equality among allies; there is only interest. The strong dictate.

For me, another important observation was that whether Democrat or Republican, they become unified when there is a need to serve state interests. If there is a need to punish Turkey, they do so unitedly, and if there is a justification not to punish Turkey, they are united in that as well. This is what is called statehood.

While remembering the victims of the genocide, we must note that they became victims at the intersection of international interests and conflicts being mapped at that time. The recognition of the Armenian Genocide is undoubtedly a historic step, but it will also be made meaningful by proactive measures to prevent new atrocities by Turkey, to which the world is currently witnessing.”
