VIDEO: Simon Martirosyan Becomes European U23 Champion and Record Holder
In the recently concluded European Weightlifting Championship for under 23 in Bucharest, Romania, Armenia's leading athlete Simon Martirosyan claimed the champion title in the +109 kg weight category.
In the snatch event, Simon Martirosyan began the competition with a lift of 192 kg, easily holding the barbell over his head on his first attempt. For the second attempt, the coaching team ordered a weight of 198 kg, which the world champion was unable to lift. However, in his third attempt, Simon Martirosyan successfully snatched 198 kg, setting a new European record for the U23 category in this event and earning a small gold medal.
In the clean and jerk event, the two-time world champion started at 231 kg and executed this attempt brilliantly. He also successfully lifted the ordered 236 kg on his second attempt, securing another small gold medal. For his third attempt, coach Pashik Alaverdyan's team ordered 342 kg, aiming to set a record in this discipline as well, but Simon Martirosyan was unable to lift the barbell.
With a total result of 434 kg, Simon Martirosyan was crowned the European U23 champion and record holder.
