The Constitutional Court is Guided by Laws, Not by the Desires of Authority: Vazgen Manukyan
Vazgen Manukyan, the Chairman of the Public Council and President of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, commented on the criminal case initiated against the President of the Constitutional Court, Hrayr Tovmasyan, and the actions taken by the National Security Service regarding his family.
“As I announced back on December 7, 2018, through the media, ‘If our state has decided to be guided by the formula “the end justifies the means,” and our people agree with this, then this is the shortest path to making the state unlawful and destroying it. The decision is yours, dear people,’” Manukyan stated.
The actions against Hrayr Tovmasyan and his family represent yet another step on this path, according to him. He recalled the grievances against the Constitutional Court over the past decades, which stemmed from the court being dependent on the ruling power and legitimizing the reproduction of that power during elections.
“Now a unique situation has arisen where we have a Constitutional Court that operates independently, as required by the Constitution, and is guided by laws, not by the desires of the authorities. So what do we want now? Do we want to change that and return to the previous state? We should only be pleased that the Constitutional Court is autonomous and does not submit to the current government,” he added.
