Canada's Armenian Genocide Committee Strongly Condemns Turkey's Actions in Syria
Canada's Armenian Genocide Committee has strongly condemned Turkey's military incursion into Syria and has called on the international community to restrain Turkey.
According to Armenpress, Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland tweeted that Canada condemns Turkey's military intervention in Syria. “We call for the protection of civilians and urge all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law,” Freeland wrote yesterday.
Previously, the Armenian Genocide Committee sent a letter to Minister Freeland in Ottawa and U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Richard Mills to express its deep concern regarding the sudden withdrawal of American troops from Syria.
According to co-chairs of the Canadian Armenian Genocide Committee, Hratch Tarakdjian and Shahen Mirakian, the U.S. decision to withdraw its troops from Syria has abandoned its allies in the region, as well as ethnic minorities, including Armenians, who have considered Syria their home for centuries. “Erdogan cannot be trusted, and the international community must take action,” Mirakian stated.
