Driver's Friend NGO Makes Proposal to Government

Driver's Friend NGO has issued a statement days after the government made a controversial decision that foreign nationals can no longer purchase vehicles in Armenia under the previous terms and take them back to their country.

"We inform you that, in cooperation with My Step faction MP Sisak Gabrielyan, 'Driver's Friend' has submitted a proposal to the government to postpone the implementation of point 1.1 of appendix N 4 of the decision No. 1251-N dated September 9, 2010, for approximately five months. The issue is that when Armenian citizens sell cars to foreign nationals, the state registration should be carried out according to the old requirements," the statement from Driver's Friend NGO reads.

It is noteworthy that citizens of EAEU countries can no longer register vehicles under the previously applied terms. Previously, they could quickly buy cars on a temporary registration, stop the registration, and take them out of the country. Now, they either have to take the cars out with transit plates or have a residence card of the Republic of Armenia to go out with Armenian plates without customs clearance; otherwise, they will have to go through customs clearance with transit plates.

This means that under this law, tens of thousands of cars imported to Armenia for sale to Kazakhs and Russians will remain in the country.
