The 10 People Who Stood in Front of the Constitutional Court Are Not Society, Says CC Member

Regarding the proposal to transition to an early pension system, I can say that I am not considering it. This was stated by Constitutional Court member Alvina Gyulumyan during a conversation with journalists today.

“When the proposals for constitutional changes are put on the table, we will see what they are. I will not give a political assessment of all this, as the Constitutional Court is an institution where various opinions about its activities may exist. If you engage in analyzing those opinions, we will at least violate the legal requirement to show neutrality and restraint,” Gyulumyan said.

She emphasized that nothing can constrain her from examining cases and making impartial decisions.

In response to the question of whether CC members see a need for constitutional changes, Gyulumyan replied, “It is not appropriate to ask a CC member such a question, because we defend the constitution. As for considering the CC a politicized body, of course I do not think so.”

In response to the observation that representatives of the Constitutional Court have political ties with representatives of the old government, Gyulumyan said, “Our society is very small. There are also connections with today’s political forces. I have connections with both sides; what does this talk about? We live in a small community. A judge simply must be able to remain unbiased and independent under these conditions.”

To the question of why society does not trust the CC and considers it not impartial, Gyulumyan answered, “I do not think the 10 people who stood in front of the CC represent society.”
