U.S. Congressional Delegation to Visit Armenia

As the world's most powerful democracy, the United States must support Armenia in establishing democracy. This was stated by Congresswoman Jackie Speier-Kanachyan during an evening event of the Armenian Assembly of America in Washington, as reported by "Voice of America."

In her opinion, the 2018 Velvet Revolution was an unprecedented event not only for Armenia but for the world at large. "I have always taken pride in my Armenian roots, but now I feel a special pride. I have always believed in the close relations between Armenia and America, but never as strongly as I do now. I have always hoped to see Armenia as a democratic country, and now that is not just a dream," she remarked.

According to the Congresswoman, Armenia now faces three main challenges: to develop its economy by leveraging the opportunities provided by the Velvet Revolution, to strengthen its position in the region, and to create opportunities for its citizens. A U.S. Congressional delegation will arrive in Armenia for a week-long visit starting October 1 to discuss practical programs for cooperation with the Armenian government. The delegation will include members from both the Democratic and Republican parties, as noted by Speier.

"I am confident that we will feel proud to witness Armenia's new reality. Democracy in Armenia has become tangible at a time when it is declining globally. Armenia is a bright spot in this grim picture, and it is our collective duty to keep that light alive," she emphasized.

In connection with the award ceremony of the Armenian Assembly of America, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also sent a special congratulatory letter to Jackie Speier-Kanachyan. The Congresswoman expressed that the letter is of special significance to her. "I have great respect for Nikol Pashinyan. It is hard to describe in words the importance of the peaceful transfer of power he has led, his efforts to move the country forward, and the fight against corruption. I will try to support this important cause as much as I can, and I am sure that is what my mother would want," she added.
