From September 1, school bags will be lighter, and food will be stable

As we approach September 1, the Day of Knowledge and Education, this year falls on a Sunday. There will not be a formal class process; however, festive events will be organized in all educational institutions across the country to celebrate.

School Bags Will Be Lighter

The health of our children is paramount to us. Starting this academic year, approximately 48 textbooks will be distributed in two parts—first part and second part. In the first semester, the second part of the textbook will be kept at home by the child and will not be taken to school. After completing the first part, the student will then transition to the second part. The bulky textbooks that are being republished this year will become two-volume. Importantly, this change will not create an additional financial burden for parents, as they will be provided free of charge for elementary school classes.

10% Salary Increase for Around 38,000 Teachers

To support the 10% salary increase, approximately 6 billion drams will be allocated from the budget over the course of one year. The government will develop programs to further increase salaries in line with economic growth. For example, the 'Teacher' program is planned, which will lead to a salary increase of around 50% for teachers who undergo voluntary retraining. There is a direct connection established between quality and remuneration.

Expansion of Financial and Entrepreneurial Education

This academic year, financial education will be introduced in an additional 350 schools, bringing the total coverage of this program to 750 schools, while entrepreneurial education will be taught in all elementary classes across the country. As a result of this program, a more literate and financially knowledgeable citizen will be formed, which will subsequently impact the quality of life of that individual and the development of the country's economy.

Stable School Meals

The World Food Organization provided hot meals for 180 days during the 2018-2019 school year for around 60,000 elementary students in the Aragatsotn, Armavir, Gegharkunik, Kotayk, and Lori regions. In five other regions—Shirak, Syunik, Tavush, Vayots Dzor, and Ararat—the program is being implemented by the Government of the Republic of Armenia, ensuring meals for 40,000 preschool and elementary school students. Starting from September 2019, schools in Aragatsotn region will transition from the World Food Organization to the commitment of the Armenian government.

Non-Mandatory Choice of School Uniforms

No school can impose any clothing on students. This decision must be made by each parent and child together. The ministry does not oppose black and white clothing; it is against imposing any specific colors on anyone.
