Kosovo's Parliament Announces Self-Dissolution
Kosovo's Parliament has announced its self-dissolution. On August 22 in Pristina, Parliament Speaker Kadri Veseli stated that 89 of the 120 deputies supported the decision. Early elections are set to take place within 45 days, according to DW.
Following Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj's resignation a month ago, several parties have called for early elections. Haradinaj justified his resignation by citing a summons to appear before the Hague tribunal regarding war crimes during the conflict in Kosovo.
At the end of the court session in late July, he remained silent and only stated at the very end that he had always acted in accordance with the norms of law. During the 1998-99 war in Kosovo, Ramush Haradinaj was the commander of the Kosovo UCK rebel army. Serbian authorities accuse him of crimes against the Serbian minority in Kosovo during the war. More than 13,000 people lost their lives as a result of the conflict in Kosovo.
