Military Clashes Between Indian and Pakistani Troops
Over the weekend, military clashes were reported between Indian and Pakistani troops in the Jammu and Kashmir region, according to DW, citing AFP. The agency presents data from the Indian Armed Forces, indicating that one Indian soldier was killed in the battles on August 17. Numerous armed incidents occurred around Srinagar, resulting in at least eight injuries.
AFP, referencing its sources, reported that at least four thousand individuals have been arrested for violating public safety laws. Most of them have been airlifted out of Kashmir as local jails are overcrowded, according to AFP.
On August 7, Pakistani authorities downgraded diplomatic ties with India after it revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. On August 5, New Delhi clarified the special status of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region, which is enshrined in India’s constitution. At the end of July, central authorities began deploying an additional 10,000 troops to the state, which has been experiencing unstable political conditions.
On August 2, the state government urged tourists and Indian pilgrims to leave as soon as possible. Official Islamabad termed the actions of the Indian authorities as “illegal and unilateral.” The territory of Kashmir has remained disputed between India and Pakistan since 1947, when London divided British India along religious lines, granting independence.
Both sides administer different regions of Kashmir.
