Not Using Armenian Airspace for Flights from Turkey to Nakhchivan Is Not a Political Issue - Civil Aviation

The decision not to use Armenian airspace for flights from Turkey to Nakhchivan was made for optimization purposes and is not related to any political issues. In a conversation with Armenpress, Galust Poghosyan, head of the Civil Aviation Committee’s Department of Airport Certification and Air Traffic Management, commented on Turkey's decision not to use Armenian airspace during flights to Nakhchivan.

“Turkey has opened a new route in that area, which lies in its airspace, and flights will go through that route. I should mention that this concerns one flight per week. Previously, it was passing through Armenian airspace and going to Nakhchivan; now they have chosen a more optimized option, which will naturally reduce their expenses and shorten the overall duration of the flight. I repeat, this decision is purely about optimization and has no connection with any political issue,” the committee representative said.

The head of Turkey’s General Directorate of Civil Aviation, Huseyin Keskin, stated that flights from Turkish airports to Nakhchivan airport will no longer utilize Armenian or Iranian airspace. According to him, starting from August 15, flights will take place through the airspace of the narrow corridor in Turkey that connects Turkey to Nakhchivan and has a width of only 13 kilometers near the border.
