Senior Prosecutor Accused of Receiving Large Bribe

Senior Prosecutor Accused of Receiving Large Bribe

Based on the materials of a criminal case initiated by the Investigative Department of the National Security Service of Armenia, the acting Prosecutor General of Armenia has decided to charge Senior Prosecutor L. K. from the Prosecutor General's Office with receiving a large bribe under Article 311, Part 3 of the Armenian Criminal Code.

Evidence has reportedly been obtained in the criminal case indicating that the senior prosecutor, using his official position, requested a large bribe from a close associate of G. G., a convicted individual sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2013 for robbery under aggravating circumstances as per Article 175, Part 3, Clause 3 of the Criminal Code. This request was made in June 2019 in relation to the conditional early release of the convicted individual. The prosecutor allegedly intervened in the judicial process to ensure that the prosecutor participating in the hearing would not object to the motion for conditional release and to promote a favorable decision for the convict if the court accepted the motion.

Following the acting Prosecutor General's order, the activities of Senior Prosecutor L. K. have been suspended. A motion has been submitted to the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction for selecting pre-trial detention as a measure of constraint for him.

The investigation is ongoing, and measures are being taken under proper prosecutorial supervision to ensure a thorough, complete, and objective examination of the case circumstances.
