Why Facebook and Instagram are Down

At the moment, it is impossible to access certain social media sites in Armenia. Information security expert Samvel Martirosyan stated in an interview with SHANTNEWS.am that there is a problem related to Facebook and Instagram, including the Messenger service. According to him, the issue is global, occurring not only in Armenia but also in several countries, including Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus.

"There is definitely an issue in the Eastern region, but at this moment, it is difficult to say what it is. Their overall technical situation has been mixed for a few days now. Instagram was also down for a couple of hours yesterday. If you recall, there was a global issue a few days ago where images were not appearing; in short, there have been general technical problems," he said.

When asked if it can be predicted how long it will take to resolve the issue, Martirosyan noted that there are times when the problem gets fixed and then reappears. He also mentioned that the issue is not affecting everyone.

"For example, it comes and goes for me. I think it's a matter of a few hours; it usually doesn’t last longer than that in these cases," he stated.

We inquired whether hackers could take advantage of this situation and if there was a risk of data leakage. He replied, "I don't think so. It could be a consequence of a hacker attack, meaning not that they are taking advantage of this, but rather that the attack is the cause. However, it is usually some technical internal issue."
