Judges to Vet Judges: New Draft Prepared
The newspaper "Zhoghavour" reports: "Today’s scheduled general assembly of judges is expected to be heated. According to our sources, some judges are preparing to present a new draft at the assembly.
Specifically, this draft proposes to establish requirements for candidates' speeches prior to voting. We have learned that the speech should contain a summary of the candidate's judicial activities, including information about high-profile cases, approaches regarding the bases and procedures for vetting judges, complete information about assets and income revealing their sources, and comprehensive information about political connections.
Moreover, the meeting is to be open to media representatives as well. Thus, the judicial system is proposing that candidates undergo a public vetting process, and members of the Supreme Judicial Council must also be vetted.
What decision the judges will make will become clear today. Given the current situation in the Supreme Judicial Council, today’s session is indeed significant, as the future president of the Supreme Judicial Council, which plays a crucial role in the Armenian judicial system, will be one of the members elected from the general assembly of judges, rather than from those appointed by the National Assembly. Since there are currently 2 judges remaining in the council, and 3 more are to be elected today, it is possible that the new president will be one of the judges elected today."
