Major Fire in One of Abovyan's High-Rise Buildings Turns Home's Contents to Ashes
Today, on July 9, a major fire broke out in the Kotayk region. Around 19:30, the Emergency Situations Ministry's operational management center received a call reporting that a fire had ignited in an apartment on the 9th floor of a building on Republic Street in Abovyan, and firefighters were urgently needed.
According to photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan, before the firefighters from Abovyan and the firefighting team from Yerevan arrived at the scene, citizens risked their lives to fight the spread of the flames, evacuating residents from the affected apartment. Upon arrival, the firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading further and eventually extinguished it.
A number of citizens gathered at the scene rightly voiced their concerns, stating that the responsible officials in the Emergency Situations Ministry should provide the Abovyan firefighting unit with an aerial ladder. Everyone knows that there are high-rise buildings in Abovyan as well, and having an aerial ladder could have allowed them to combat the flames more effectively; however, the Abovyan firefighters arrived with limited capabilities.
The photojournalist reported that medical personnel from the Abovyan hospital also arrived on the scene to assist several citizens. Fortunately, no one sustained serious injuries, though some were in a state of shock. Abovyan's Mayor Vahagn Gevorgyan also arrived at the fire site.
According to G. Shamshyan, the building in question is a 12-story structure, and the fire in the 9th-floor apartment turned all of the home's contents to ash.
