BBC's Coverage on Environmentalists' Warnings Regarding the State of Lake Sevan
“Armenian environmentalists are sounding the alarm – the country's largest lake is facing serious danger. It has once again bloomed. If the country's authorities do not take measures, then the lake will turn into a swamp,” reads an article published by the British BBC, which has addressed the threat of Lake Sevan's swampification.
Recently, Armenian environmentalists raised concerns about another case of blooming in Lake Sevan. As reported by econews.am, the Ministry of Environment has issued a statement regarding the condition of Lake Sevan, stating: “In recent days, an increase in the cyanobacteria of the Anabaena genus has been recorded in Lake Sevan. These algae were first observed in the lake in the 1940s, and the first case of blooming was recorded in 1964, occurring periodically in varying degrees in subsequent years. Widespread blooming was also observed in 2018.”
Experts argue that the reasons are linked to the inaction or criminal activities of the authorities: the use of lake water for irrigation purposes has exceeded the legally specified amounts, the indiscriminate destruction of fish stocks, and the uncontrolled discharge of waste into the lake.
