‘Zhoghovourd’: New Developments Expected
‘Zhoghovourd’ newspaper reports: From June 4, 15,000 citizens have already joined the petition in Artsakh. As known, it began to amend Article 48 of the Constitution, initiated by supporters of Artsakh hero Samvel Babayan, to allow him to run as a candidate for the presidency of Artsakh.
However, the number of signatures is insufficient to put the issue to a referendum, as it must still be discussed in parliament and approved by a two-thirds majority of the deputies. This means that the votes of the deputies will be decisive.
In this context, ‘Zhoghovourd’ interviewed Artsakh National Assembly member Gagik Bagunts, who opposed the addition of the provision in the constitution that would also allow citizens of Armenia to run for the presidency or parliament of Artsakh. “Of course, I am against it. There are two Armenian republics, and Artsakh is a separate state,” he noted.
