Georgian Authorities Agree to Conduct Early Parliamentary Elections in 2020
The ruling "Georgian Dream" party's founder Bidzina Ivanishvili made a statement after the party's political council meeting, as reported by "Alic Media." Speaking about the significance of pluralism for democracy, Ivanishvili announced that elections would be held under a proportional system starting in 2020.
It is worth noting that this was one of the demands from the participants of the ongoing protests in Tbilisi over the past several days. According to Bidzina Ivanishvili, the amendment to the Constitution regarding proportional elections from 2024 was initiated by the "Georgian Dream" itself.
The protests, which began on June 20, continue to unfold. The main demands of the demonstrators include: 1. Proportional elections from 2020 2. The release of those arrested during the night of June 20 3. The resignation of Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia 4. Holding accountable the police who used force during the night of June 21.
