Details: Man Who Killed Mother in Gyumri Known for Aggressive Behavior
Last night, neighbors found the body of a 71-year-old woman in her apartment in building 12 on Lukasyan Street in Gyumri. Law enforcement discovered signs of more than 10 stab wounds inflicted to her head with a piercing weapon.
The suspect is the son of the deceased woman, 50-year-old Vanik Hakobi Zakaryan. He was apprehended by the police in the morning while heading from Gyumri to Yerevan.
According to SHANTNEWS.am, he has been registered at the Gyumri Mental Health Center for many years. Center director Nadia Vardanyan reported that Vanik Zakaryan has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia since 1994, which is the most severe form of schizophrenia. The director also noted that the man has received inpatient treatment in a psychiatric hospital 25 times over the last 14 years, typically twice a year for around two months.
Whenever he was discharged from the center, it was always his mother who came to collect his medications. Nadia Vardanyan stated that during his time at the mental health center, Vanik Zakaryan consistently expressed dissatisfaction regarding his mother's involvement in a religious sect, claiming that sect members frequently gathered in their home. According to the center's director, Vanik's mother would always bring him to the center when he was in an aggressive state.
His most recent discharge from the psychiatric hospital was last November. The director explained that after treatment, his condition had improved sufficiently that he no longer required continuous medical supervision.
It is noteworthy that this is the second incident in Shirak region within the last month in which the individuals suspected of murder have reported mental health issues.
