Liechtenstein Apologizes for Referring to Azerbaijan Instead of Armenia

The Liechtenstein Football Federation has apologized for a misunderstanding caused by its employees. On June 9, prior to the Euro 2020 qualifying match between Armenia and Liechtenstein, a representative from the federation's press service addressed the issue. A few days ago, information was published on the official website of the Liechtenstein federation regarding upcoming matches, but instead of mentioning Armenia, Azerbaijan's name was mistakenly included, leading to an uproar in the Armenian media and social networks.

The representative clarified that the mistake occurred because they had been continuously discussing the matches of their under-21 team and the Azerbaijani team of the same age category throughout the week, which led to the error.

“I apologize for the misunderstanding,” he stated.

The under-21 match in question took place yesterday and ended in a 1-1 draw.

In October 2018, a similar misunderstanding occurred involving Liechtenstein during a UEFA Nations League group stage match against Gibraltar. Prior to that match, Liechtenstein's anthem was mistakenly played instead of Gibraltar’s at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, which led to a subsequent apology from the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA).
