Tensions Rise in Yekaterinburg
Protests have continued in Yekaterinburg since Monday, aimed at opposing the construction of a new church in a square near the Drama Theater.
They plan to build the Church of St. Catherine in place of a cathedral that was constructed in the 18th century and destroyed in 1930. The church is set to be located in the 'Labor' square.
Protesters have emulated certain methods used by demonstrators during Armenia's 'Velvet Revolution.' They are sitting on the roads, expressing their dissent through song and music; some have even set up tents to spend the night in the park area.
It is noteworthy that the protests have been accompanied by clashes between protesters and police, with dozens of people detained. Currently, information suggests that 70 individuals have been detained. A decision has been made to cut down trees in one of the local squares to make way for the church.
