Video: First Liver Transplant Performed in Armenia's History
Yesterday, for the first time in Armenia's history, a liver transplant was performed from a living donor. A portion of the liver from a daughter was transplanted to her mother, giving the latter a chance to save her life.
This significant intervention in Armenian medicine was made possible through Armenian-Russian cooperation in the healthcare sector.
The transplant was conducted entirely free of charge at the Astghik Medical Center (the cost for a similar surgery abroad ranges around $100,000).
The Ministry of Health, highlighting the importance of developing transplant medicine, began cooperation with our partners from Belarus and Russia this January.
“We also plan to increase the funding allocated for transplants in the 2020 budget so that we can carry out more interventions and save more lives,” stated Health Minister Arsen Torosyan.
Additionally, the minister has already visited the patient who received the liver transplant and her daughter, the donor. He stated that the condition of the operated patients is stable.
