Accepting Madrid Principles Was a Slip-Up, Says Navasardyan
Azerbaijan's president has not become a peacemaker; rather, Armenia has changed. This point of view was expressed by political scientist Arman Navasardyan while discussing the meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Vienna.
“I absolutely do not think that Aliyev's political mentality has changed and that he will become a dove of peace tomorrow. He remains as he was. It’s just that Armenia has changed; a legitimate government has come to power that cannot be talked to in the same way as previous administrations, which he used to address by saying that Aghdam is their homeland,” said the political scientist.
Navasardyan also positively assessed the Pashinyan-Aliyev meeting. Speaking about the need to return to negotiations concerning Nagorno-Karabakh, he noted that in 1998, thanks to “brilliant diplomatic demarches,” Artsakh was excluded from negotiations. Navasardyan emphasized that “accepting the Madrid Principles was our slip-up,” and this must be abandoned smoothly.
