Presidential Elections Taking Place Today in Ukraine

Presidential elections are taking place today in Ukraine. As of 08:00 local time, approximately 30,000 polling stations across the country have opened. Voting will conclude at 20:00. Voting is also organized in 72 countries. A total of 29 million residents of Ukraine have the right to vote.

Two thousand observers will monitor the election process. A record number of candidates—39—are vying for the presidency. The length of the ballot is also a record, measuring 80 cm.

According to surveys, the frontrunner is Volodymyr Zelensky, leader of the “Servant of the People” party, with support from 29 percent of voters. He is followed by Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the “Batkivshchyna” party, with 18.7 percent, and the current president, Petro Poroshenko, with 16.5 percent.
