Victims of March 1 Events Will Not Be Compensated, But Supported
The newspaper 'Hraparak' reports that the draft law on compensation for damages caused to individuals' lives or health during the events of March 1 and 2, 2008, in Yerevan, has been presented by MPs Lena Nazaryan and Alen Simonian.
There were reports that the Ministry of Justice would provide a negative opinion on the bill; however, it was not presented at yesterday's government meeting. Minister of Justice Artak Zeynalyan stated, “The authors have withdrawn it for revision, taking our recommendations into account.” He pointed out that it will be legislation regarding support, not compensation, as “the National Assembly is not authorized to grant such authority to the executive branch, and the executive branch is not authorized to enter the jurisdiction of the judiciary,” the newspaper writes.
