Samvel Babayan Has Been Stripped of Artsakh Citizenship Years Ago, Files to Court

The former commander of the Artsakh Defense Army, hero of Artsakh Samvel Babayan has filed a lawsuit to restore his citizenship of Artsakh. Babayan made this statement in an interview with Tert.am.

Babayan noted that he was stripped of his Artsakh citizenship back in 2006, but only recently became aware of it. “It was a long time ago, but they had no right to do that. They had no right to strip me of my citizenship just because of a change in my registration. I learned about this today from my lawyer,” he said, adding that he did not apply for his citizenship to be revoked.

Babayan emphasized that they then talk about the law, and that he has not submitted an application for his citizenship to be revoked. “The Constitution of Artsakh clearly states that no one has the right to strip anyone of their citizenship, even at their own request. Now the question arises: how have they violated the law? Is there any law that supersedes the Constitution?” Babayan noted.
